It’s one of the first practical questions people have when booking a mobile car detailer for the first time: do I need to provide anything, or does the detailer bring everything they need?
The answer depends on the operator, and it’s worth understanding the difference before you book, so there are no surprises on the day.
The Short Answer
Professional, fully self contained mobile detailers bring their own water supply and power source. You shouldn’t need to provide anything beyond a suitable space and access to your car.
However, not all mobile detailers operate this way. Some smaller or newer operators work from the customer’s garden tap and outdoor power point as standard practice. This is common and widely accepted, but it’s something to confirm before the booking is finalised.
Why Water Supply Matters
A typical full detail uses a meaningful amount of water, particularly for the exterior wash, pre rinse, and rinsing between stages. Mobile detailers handle this in one of three ways:
Self Contained Water Tanks
Many professional mobile detailers carry onboard water tanks in their vans or trailers, typically holding between 100 and 400 litres, which is sufficient for one or more complete details. Some operators use standard tap water. Higher end operators may carry deionised or filtered water, which reduces the risk of mineral deposits and water spots during the final rinse.
Self contained water supply means the detailer can work anywhere, apartment car parks, office buildings, remote properties, without needing access to a tap. It’s the most professional and flexible setup.
Customer’s Water Supply
Many mobile detailers, particularly sole traders and smaller operations, use the customer’s garden tap. This is a completely normal and widely accepted practice. The amount of water used for a car detail is modest, typically equivalent to a few loads of washing, and most customers don’t give it a second thought.
If you’re in an apartment or unit without outdoor tap access, this is an important point to raise when booking. Some operators won’t be able to service locations without an accessible water supply unless they’re self contained.
Waterless or Rinseless Products
A smaller number of mobile operators work primarily with waterless or rinseless products. These are spray on solutions that encapsulate and lift dirt without a traditional rinse. They work well for lightly soiled vehicles but aren’t appropriate for heavily dirty cars or full exterior detail work.
Operators using this method typically have lower water requirements and can work in apartments or restricted access locations more easily.
What About Power?
Power is required for equipment like vacuums, polishing machines, steam cleaners, and extraction units. Mobile detailers manage this in a few ways:
Generator: a portable generator carried in the van powers all equipment independently. Professional generators used by detailers are relatively quiet and designed for sustained operation. A self contained detailer with a generator can work anywhere.
Customer’s power point: many mobile detailers ask to use an outdoor power point for their vacuum and polishing equipment. Again, this is common practice and most customers are comfortable with it. Confirm this when booking if you’re at a location without accessible outdoor power.
Battery powered equipment: a growing number of professional detailers use high capacity battery powered vacuums and polishers, reducing or eliminating the need for a power source entirely.
What Questions Should You Ask Before Booking?
To avoid any day of confusion, ask these two questions when you book:
Are you fully self contained with your own water supply and power, or will you need access to a tap and/or power point?
If I’m in an apartment or a location without easy outdoor access, is that something you can accommodate?
A straightforward, confident answer to these questions is a good sign. A detailer who is clear about their setup and what they need from you is operating professionally.
Does It Affect the Quality of the Result?
The quality of a detail is primarily determined by the skill of the detailer and the products they use, not whether the water came from their own tank or your garden tap. A highly skilled detailer using your water supply will produce a better result than an unskilled operator with a fully equipped van.
The self contained setup matters most for flexibility of location and for the quality of the final rinse water. Deionised water used for the final rinse eliminates the risk of mineral water spots. This is a meaningful advantage for paint correction work or ceramic coating applications where a spotless finish is essential.
Preparing for Your Mobile Detail
Regardless of whether your detailer is self contained or using your facilities, here’s how to prepare:
Clear your driveway or parking space so the detailer has room to move around the vehicle
Remove personal items from the interior before they arrive
If they’ve asked to use your tap and power, make sure both are accessible and working
If you’re in an apartment, check with your building manager about any restrictions on detailing in common car parks
When you book through CarConex, you can ask detailers directly about their setup before committing to a booking. Compare responses, review profiles, and choose a detailer whose setup suits your location. Post your request through the app to get started.
