Not all car detailers are equal. The difference between a skilled, professional detailer and someone who has bought a pressure washer and set up a social media page can be the difference between a car that looks spectacular and one that comes back with new scratches and a lingering chemical smell.
Detailing is an unregulated industry. There are no mandatory qualifications or licences required to call yourself a detailer in Australia. That puts the responsibility on the customer to make a smart choice. Here’s what to look for.
Look for Genuine Reviews, Not Just Star Ratings
Five star ratings are easy to accumulate among friends and family. What you want to see is detailed, specific reviews from real customers describing what was done to their car and what the result was like.
Look for reviews that mention specific services, car types, and before and after descriptions. A detailer with 12 detailed, genuine reviews is more trustworthy than one with 80 generic five star ratings and no written feedback.
Check multiple platforms where possible, Google, Facebook, and industry specific directories. A consistently positive reputation across platforms is a strong signal.
Ask to See Their Work
A professional detailer should have a portfolio of before and after photos from real jobs, not stock images. Paint correction results, interior transformations, and ceramic coating installs all photograph well and any detailer proud of their work will have examples to show.
Be sceptical of profiles with only staged shots of clean cars. The work that demonstrates skill is showing the before and after. That’s where technique and results become visible.
Check What Products They Use
Professional detailers use professional grade products from recognised brands. It’s reasonable to ask what shampoos, polishes, compounds, and coatings they use. You don’t need to be an expert to assess the answer. A detailer who is happy to discuss their products and why they choose them is demonstrating knowledge and transparency.
Be cautious of vague answers like ‘the best products’ without specifics, or detailers who can’t tell you what coating brand they’re applying for a ceramic coating job.
Get a Clear Quote with Scope of Work
A professional detailer will provide a clear breakdown of what’s included in any service, not just a price. If a ‘full detail’ quote doesn’t specify what that includes, ask. The scope of a full detail varies significantly between operators, and ‘full detail’ is not a standardised term.
A clear written quote that lists the services being performed protects both you and the detailer. If a detailer is reluctant to specify what they’re doing for the price, that’s a concern.
Ask About Their Process for Your Specific Car
A good detailer will ask questions about your car before quoting, its colour, condition, what issues you’ve noticed, how it’s been kept, and what outcome you’re looking for. This information affects the time, products, and techniques required.
A detailer who quotes without asking anything about the car’s condition is either quoting a standard package regardless of what your car actually needs, or doesn’t know enough to know what questions to ask. Neither is ideal.
Red Flags to Watch For
No fixed location or business identity: while mobile detailers are completely legitimate, they should still have a business name, ABN, and verifiable online presence.
Prices that seem too good to be true: quality detailing takes time. A ‘full detail’ quoted at the price of a basic car wash is not a full detail.
Pressure to decide immediately or ‘today only’ pricing: legitimate businesses don’t need high pressure tactics.
No insurance: ask whether they have public liability insurance. If they damage your car during the detail, you want to know they’re covered.
Unwillingness to provide references or show past work: a detailer confident in their results will be happy to share them.
Vague or inconsistent communication: how a detailer communicates before the job often reflects how they’ll communicate during and after it.
Price vs Value
The cheapest detailer is rarely the best value. A low price often means less time spent, cheaper products, or less experience, all of which affect the result. At the same time, the most expensive detailer isn’t automatically the best.
The right price point is one that reflects the time required to do the job properly, professional grade products, and a level of skill that produces a result you’re happy with. Getting two or three quotes for the same scope of work is a reasonable way to calibrate.
